IT holds the patent for a common Internet technology, and it now wants to charge a fee for its use. The “technology” that enables a visitor to a web site to click on an image to go to another site is patented. A local firm (Singapore), Vuestar Technologies has begun sending invoices to local website owners demanding for payment for licensing fees.

The sites targeted are those with a predominantly Singaporean audience, which include overseas sites as well. Their annual fee ranges from $200 for light users to as much as $10,000 for those who use the technology widely on their sites. Like Nuffnang, Advertlets and other more…..

Mr Ronald Langford, 68, an Australian, claimed he came up with the idea in 2000, before internet bandwidth allowed for images and other multimedia to be used broadly. And in 2003, he was granted a patent for a invention, which he calls the ” Method of Locating Websites using Visual Images”.

This potentially means that most websites and blogs will be affected. Websites which contain only text with no images are not at risk. If the claim of infringement patent stands, definitely, the big giants like Yahoo, Microsoft and Google will also be greatly affected. And definitely me as well!! “Ouch h”
